Holding a baby close to your body in a soft carrier is known as "babywearing".
Babywearing has many benefits for both babies and parents.
Benefits of Babywearing for Babies:

Baby feels safe, secure, and comfortable close to your heart. The similarity to the womb created by the warmth and movement of the parent reduces the baby's level of stress hormones and results in less fussy babies.
Baby is less likely to experience digestive irritation (colic) when carried in a sling. Again, this has to do with reduced levels of stress hormones.
Baby is often in a quiet-alert state while in the sling. Therefore, the baby has many opportunities for enhanced stimulation and learning.
Because baby is at the level of adult conversation, carrying a baby in a sling enhances speech and language development
Benefits of Babywearing for Parents :

Parent has hands free to accomplish unlimited tasks. In fact, at least one happy Simple Slings customer has written to tell us she returned to work after the birth of her baby, and she wore the baby at work!
Sibling jealously of a newborn is greatly reduced because parents are still able to play with and tend to older children while simultaneously caring for the newborn..
Breastfeeding can be easy and discreet while wearing a baby in a sling.
There is no need to be tied to home for nap-time when your baby is used to being in a sling. Babies sleep comfortably in slings.
Slings distribute the baby's weight evenly across your shoulders, back, and/or hip and are worn comfortably for many hours at a time.
Toddlers who were carried in slings are not as clingy as those who were not regularly worn. They are securely attached to their caregivers, and experience less seperation anxiety.
